Frequently Asked Fabric Roman Shade Question:
Why do some fabrics use the hot melt adhesive (instead of sewing) to seal the edges on Knife Pleat shades for silkier fabrics?
ABS is using a hot melt adhesive (instead of sewing) to seal the edges on Knife Pleat shades for these 2 silkier fabrics :
- TILLEY/MAHER (with BO liner for all sizes, large size shades with LF liner)
- BLAINE/THEIS (with BO liner for all sizes, large size shades with LF liner)
SEWN
HOT MELT ADHESIVE

Hot melt adhesive is used in this application because sewn edges tend to wrinkle on the front side of the shade with these silkier materials. While this adhesive process takes longer than traditional sewing, it significantly improves the fabric's surface appearance. It's important to note that while hot melt adhesive greatly reduces the visibility of wrinkles, it does not eliminate them.
See attached (below) TILLEY photo showing the wrinkles with sewn edges:
See attached TILLEY with special treatment photo showing fewer wrinkles with the hot melt adhesive treatment.
We are not planning to add this to the Product Guide for now, as it may lead to further questions. This is just an FYI in case the question resurfaces.
Note: This finishing method does not apply to Front Slat shades.
