Frequently Asked Natural Roller Shade Question:
QUESTION:
A newly installed cordless shade will only roll down a short way then I can’t budge it any further. What could be wrong?
EXPLANATION:
If a newly installed cordless roller shade only lowers a short distance before stopping, the issue is typically related to one of the following:
1. Spring tension not properly set
- Cordless shades use an internal spring motor to control movement.
- If the spring is under-tensioned or not “charged” correctly during installation, the shade may stop prematurely or resist further lowering.
2. Fabric misalignment or telescoping
- The shade material may not be rolling evenly on the tube.
- If it shifts to one side (telescoping), it can bind against the bracket or itself, preventing further movement.
3. Bracket installation issues
- If the mounting brackets are not level or are installed too tightly, they can pinch the roller tube.
- Misalignment between brackets can also restrict rotation.
4. Obstruction inside the roll
- Packaging material, debris, or a fold in the natural material can create resistance.
- Natural woven shades are more prone to slight irregularities that can catch.
5. Cordless mechanism defect
- In some cases, the internal mechanism may be faulty, especially if the issue occurs immediately upon first use.
6. Non cassette shades: please see troubleshooting videos here:
PROPOSED RESPONSE:
Thanks for reaching out—sorry to hear your new shade isn’t lowering fully. We can help you get this working properly.
A cordless natural roller shade that stops partway down is usually experiencing a small alignment or tension issue. Here are a few things you can try:
- Gently pull the shade down a bit further with steady, even pressure to see if the internal spring engages fully.
- Check that the shade is hanging evenly and not shifting to one side as it rolls—if it is, raising it fully and lowering it slowly can help realign it.
- Inspect the brackets to make sure they’re level and not too tight against the ends of the roller.
- Look for any obstructions in the roll (such as packaging material or a fold in the fabric).
If the shade still won’t lower past that point, it’s possible the internal mechanism needs adjustment or replacement. In that case, we’d be happy to help with a warranty remake—just let us know and we’ll take care of it.
