Frequently Asked Outdoor Shade Questions:

QUESTION:

What is the gear ratio for the crank controlled outdoor shades?

EXPLANATION:

  • What is a gear ratio? A gear ratio is calculated by the number of crank turns to rotate the window shade tube once.
  • XDM confirmed that it takes 5 turns of the crank to rotate the tube once. Based on this, the gear ratio is 5:1
    • For the outdoor shades, 5 rotations of the crank will move the fabric 6". It would take 65 to 70 cranks to raise/lower a shade 80" tall.
  • The more fabric on the tube, the quicker the fabric will move.

PROPOSED RESPONSE:

The gear ratio for the outdoor shade crank is 5:1. This means that it takes 5 turns of the crank to rotate the tube once.
